Raw material mapt

At Bioodi we use several natural raw materials, please find an explanation below.

Bagasse

Bagasse comes from the French word bagage, via the Spanish word bagazo. The meaning of the word is originally just "waste." Some of the bio-based disposables from Bioodi are made from the pulp of sugar cane stems (bagasse). This pulp remains after the sugar has been extracted and until recently it was considered worthless. Bagasse has a high content of cellulose, around 50%, more than is found in wood. With our line of soup bowls, plates, trays and sauce cups, a new and useful application has been found for this residual product.

The final product is completely biodegradable and compostable. In the event that the product ends up in the normal waste stream, it is less harmful to the environment and green energy can be generated during incineration. Another big advantage for nature is that sugar cane stems grow quickly and are available in abundance.

Corn

Corn is often the basis for bio plastics called PLA. PLA stands for Poly Lactic Acid. PLA is usually made from sugar and starch from corn and beets. PLA is a versatile, 100% bio-based and also compostable plastic that is already used in a wide range of sustainable products. The cornstarch is processed into granulate. From this granulate, sustainable disposables are made, such as salad containers, soda and beer cups, smoothie cups and much more. During production PLA is more sustainable than normal plastics, CO2 emissions are considerably lower than with fossil fuels. An important property of PLA is that it is not yet heat-resistant and can start to deform when heated at around 45 ° C. It is important to keep the products in a cool place. (this was mentioned on the webiste)

Our cutlery is made from CPLA. CPLA also has sugars and starch from corn, but lime and talc are added. This causes it to crystallize and results in CPLA (Crystallized Poly Lactic Acid). This makes it heat-resistant while still being compostable.

PEFC

PEFC is the abbreviation of “Program for the Endorsment of Forest Certification”. This is the largest quality mark worldwide in the field of sustainable paper and wood. Their goal is to increase the share of paper and wood from well-managed forests as well as to promote sustainable forest management. Through forest management certification, forest owners can demonstrate that the forest is managed sustainably according to the requirements set by PEFC. The certified wood that is extracted from these forests can be certified as PEFC. The wood with the PEFC quality mark is processed by Chain of Custody-certified companies further down the chain into products such as cups, magazines, garden fencing and similar items. Our standard bread bags for Italian rolls and baguette are made with PEFC paper. Dit was op de website

FSC®

The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC®) is an international organization that is committed to conservation and responsible forest management worldwide. FSC® speaks of responsible forest management when the ecological, social and economic aspects of forest management are taken into account in a balanced way. Wood and paper products that originate from an FSC®-certified forest can be recognized by the FSC® label. To ensure that products with this quality mark actually come from a responsibly managed forest, all links in the product's trade chain must be certified. Only when, for example, a forest manager, paper factory, paper wholesaler and printing company can demonstrate compliance with the rules of FSC®, can a product be sold as FSC® and can the FSC® logo be placed on it. The certification of these companies is done by independent certifiers.

Bamboo

Bamboo is a renewable raw material that in recent years has become one of the most important substitutes for tropical hardwood. There are various bamboo applications and products, from floors to tableware. The bamboo line that we use at Bioodi varies from various sizes of picks and amuse trays to plates. Bamboo grows fast and requires only a small amount of water to grow. Our bamboo disposables are fully biodegradable.

Palm leaf

Our palm leaf line is made from fallen palm leaves. No palm trees are cut down for the production of the palm leaf tableware. The leaves that are used come from the "Betel palm". The "betel nut" grows on this palm. This nut has a slightly euphoric effect and counteracts the feeling of hunger. The fallen palm leaves are collected and pressed into dishes, plates, bowls and more. The pressing is done manually which makes each palm leaf item unique. No plate or bowl is the same. Palm leaf is completely biodegradable and no coatings are used. Our palm leaf line has, among other things, the property that it is heat-resistant and can therefore also be used, for example, in the microwave.

NatureFlex

NatureFlex is a film made from a series of compostable flexible films made from wood pulp from managed plantations. All the wood pulp used in the manufacture of NatureFlex films comes from non-genetically modified sources. NatureFlex is very stable and will not biodegrade if it is in the box or on the shelf. Biodegradation will only take place in industrial composting (a combination of compost or waste water, micro organisms, moisture and heat) NatureFlex is used for our bread bags for Italian rolls and baguette.

ECOCERT

The EcoClean concept is one of the few in the world with ECOCERT® certification. The ECOCERT® certification is a guarantee for compliance with strict environmental standards in the production and content of the products. ECOCERT® has selected the most environmentally friendly disinfection substances. The basic principles of ECOCERT® are:

  • Reducing unnecessary waste
  • Informing consumers
  • Protecting our planet and its resources

Certified producers of cleaning products and brand owners must offer a higher level of transparency than prescribed by European law.

PCR plastic

The EcoClean range of cleaning products is supplied in 100% PCR bottles. PCR (postconsumer resin) plastic consists of a mix of recycled synthetic resin and is used instead of new polypropylene resins. By recycling plastic waste from the sea, the packaging of PCR is a sustainable and environmentally friendly alternative.

PCR is odorless and has a slight yellow color.

The main advantages of PCR bottles are:

  • Avoiding the exploitation of fossil raw materials
  • PCR plastic is resistant to stress cracking
  • The energy and water consumption used for the production of PCR plastic is less than for the production of other plastics.

Paper

Our (soup) bowls, ice cream cups and (coffee) cups are made from wood pulp from trees from sustainable forest management. The cups are bleached without chlorine and the prints are printed with water-based ink. All our products are biodegradable or compostable.

All our bags, napkins, and kraft cups are made from kraft paper. Kraft paper is a type of paper made with the kraft process. The raw material used for this is wood pine from the pine tree and spruce, the long needles ensure a high and strong quality. In the kraft process, the wood chips are treated with sulphate and lye. This leaves cellulose behind, a pure natural product. From cellulose they can manufacture the strong and high-quality kraft paper.

Mater Bi

Our waste bags (Mater-Bi) are made from corn starch. The starch from the corn serves as a bio-based raw material for the production of the waste bags. The corn that is used is 100% GMO free. GMO free means that genetic modification is not used.

The waste bags are certified with EN-13432 (European composting standard) and can be disposed as green waste after use. Handy to use after the BBQ or birthday party for example. You can deposit the durable biodegradable disposables in the waste bags and put them in the green waste. The waste bags are sturdy and a sustainable alternative to waste bags made from fossil raw materials.
